Review of Abner The Amazing by poc301 and LocutusOfBored The second game in the AGS Bake Sale, Abner the Amazing is the humorous tale of a self-proclaimed here, a thief and a mage he rescues, and their attempt to bring colour back into the world. In the middle of yet another tale of derring-do by Abner, the world suddenly loses colour. Obviously everyone is rather put out by this, so he sets out on a quest to find out what’s happened and put it right. The graphics are mostly monotone, as you might expect given the plot premise, and many backgrounds look to me as though they started life as photos, were turned into black and white images, and greatly reduced in resolution. Anyway, this along with appealing character graphics and limited animation gives the game a somewhat functional look, but it also gives the game a distinctive visual style. When colours start seeping back into the world, the effect is rather cool. There is no voice pack (I really hope a version is made some time with a voice pack), but to make up for this somewhat there are some great tunes. The interface is very simple – left-click interact, right-click examine – and the puzzles are pretty easy. Abner is a short game, but very enjoyable because of the persistent humour (you’ll have a smile on your face the whole time you play this), and overall you won’t take long to complete it, but you’ll have a blast doing so. In such a short game it’s quite cool that you actually get to control 3 different characters, too. The AGS Bake Sale is a pay-what-you-want bundle of 14 games made by the AGS (Adventure Game Studio) community, with the proceeds going to the Child’s Play charity . It’s available to buy up to the end of February 2012. http://agsbakesale.com/ See also my review of 9 Months In PC Game Reviews and News
