PC Game Review – Dark Strokes: Sins of the Father

Dark Strokes: Sins of the Father is a Gothic horror hidden object game, with quite a few puzzles of different types thrown into the mix. You play as a young man called Ethan who receives a letter from his father, who happens to be a judge, just as he us about to get married. He goes to visit his father along with his fiancé, Clair, planning to marry immediately after what he feels will be a short visit – but life’s about to throw a rather large spanner in the works, revealing a dark and dangerous plot that involves his father, Clair, and several other people – with only Ethan able to save them. The story’s developed pretty well and the music definitely lends to the overall spooky atmosphere. The heavily stylised graphics are impressive; not only that but there are some very cool special effects in some of the cut scenes, better than most other hidden object games I’ve played. There is a nice variety of puzzles, most of which are quite easy, and the hidden object aspects of the game are on a par with what I’ve come to expect. (I’ve given up expecting the objects you’re trying to find in each location or events in the game itself to have much relation to the plot!) There are a couple of continuity problems but otherwise it works really nicely. In the early hidden object screens there are bits that require you to manipulate objects to reveal other objects, but it seems that the developers either abandoned this idea or just got bored of it, since it doesn’t appear after about the first quarter of the game. Shame really, it made things a bit more interesting. There are 2 game modes – “Casual” with a 1-minute hint button and clickable areas highlighted, and “Expert” with a 2-minute hint button and clickable areas not highlighted. I feel that a whole 60 is far too long for the hint button to recharge, though that’s partly because I’m not a fan of hidden object games on the whole and don’t have patience with them, I just want to get through to the next bit of the game. The puzzles in the game are quite varied and have well designed interfaces. It takes quite a while to complete the game, probably longer than most similar games I’ve played, and the bonus chapter which is available once you’ve completed the main game is both impressively long and relevant to the plot. Dark Strokes: Sins of the Father is a well produced game with terrific aesthetics, but it does rather have its work cut out to make me recommend it, since I’m not a great fan of the game genre and really not a fan of the story genre. However it’s probably the best game of its type that I’ve played – the game itself and the plot are better developed than Mountain Crime: Requital , Weird Park: Broken Tune and Victorian Mysteries: The Women in White , the only similar games I’ve played – so if you like Gothic horror and hidden object games, you really can’t go wrong with this one.
