PC Game Review: Mountain Crime – Requital

Mountain Crime: Requital is a hidden object game with puzzle elements, based around our player character being a doctor going to treat one of his patients at a hotel. It turns out that several people have been invited to the hotel by a mysterious stranger (just why do people accept this sort of invitation?!?!), and then there’s an announcement that an escaped criminal is on the loose… of course shortly after this, people start dying. It’s up to you to find out who’s doing it and how to stop it. The game features a few innovative features, such as the objects you’re supposed to be finding being round the main target object in a circle, and actually being rational things that you’d need to look for (truly a novel concept in HOGs!). The puzzle element is reasonably well implemented and wide-ranging too. There is an awful lot of going to and fro however, which is a little frustrating. There’s some voice acting, which is okay, slightly odd music, and some atmospheric sound effects. The visuals are impressive although the characters move a bit stiffly; the backgrounds are beautifully drawn. There are 2 game modes, with Easy highlighting clickable areas when you’re over them and the hint bar recharging quickly; Hard Mode takes away the first and make the latter take longer to recharge. Some of the puzzles feature a rather annoying interface; some are tedious and some feel illogical. Individually the puzzles are quite well done, but in the context of the plot (which is kooky but rather interesting), they often don’t make much sense. The game re-uses locations in a similar way that WeirdPark: Broken Tune did. Unfortunately there are some major problems with the game (hopefully a patch will come out soon to address these). If you turn on “custom cursors” (which just changes the mouse cursor according to the action you can take) the mouse movement becomes painfully slow and jerky – rendering the game pretty much unplayable. Turn that off and you’re left with the bog standard system mouse cursor, but at least it moves at a reasonable speed. However even with this, moving the mouse at all stops all on-screen animation. This is hardly a technically demanding game so such a problem must be due to a bug somewhere in the coding (and hopefully it’s one that’s easy for the developers to isolate and solve!). This doesn’t make the game actually unplayable, but it’s certainly an annoyance. It would seem that the same bug also causes excessively long screen fade outs and ins. The plot is kind of interesting and some aspects of the game are well done, but at the moment I wouldn’t recommend Mountain Crime: Requital . Once a patch is released, it should be a lot better, although it still wouldn’t be among my personal favourite games of this type.
